It is also a diluent for dyes and an auxiliary agent for dyeing and printing. It is used as a dyeing agent for cotton fibers such as direct dyes, sulfide dyes, and vat dyes, and as a retarder for direct dyeing silk. It can increase intestinal volume and cause intestinal peristalsis, which has a laxative effect. Sodium sulfate is an antidote for barium and lead poisoning.
