2 It is a non-flammable liquid at room temperature. It is volatile and has a stimulating sweetness. Many people can smell it when the air contains parts per million of tetrachloroethylene. 3 In 1821, Michael Faraday heated hexachloroethane for the first time to decompose it into tetrachloroethylene and chlorine gas.
