PCE is an excellent solvent for organic materials. Otherwise it is volatile, highly stable, and nonflammable. For these reasons, it is widely used in dry cleaning. It is also used to degrease metal parts in the automotive and other metalworking industries, usually as a mixture with other chlorocarbons. Tetrachloroethylene is being substituted in Europe for similar but more hazardous trichloroethylene. It appears in a few consumer products including paint strippers and spot removers. It is also used in aerosol preparations.
It is used in neutrino detectors where a neutrino interacts with a neutron in the chlorine atom and converts it to a proton to form argon.
Historical applications
PCE was once extensively used as an intermediate in the manufacture of HFC-134a and related refrigerants. In the early 20th century, tetrachloroethene was used for the treatment of hookworm infestation.
Leakage disposal
Evacuate personnel from the contaminated area to a safe zone, prohibit unrelated personnel from entering the contaminated area, and require emergency responders to wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing. Do not come into direct contact with the leaked material and seal the leak while ensuring safety. Collecting, repairing, transferring, and recycling. Unable to collect available calcium polysulfides or excessive sulfur treatment.
Waste disposal method: It is recommended to use incineration for disposal. Waste and other fuels should be mixed and burned thoroughly to prevent the generation of phosgene. The hydrogen halide discharged from the incinerator is removed by an acid scrubber. In addition, tetrachloroethylene is recovered from waste and recycled for reuse.
Protective measures
Engineering control: The production process is sealed and ventilation is strengthened.
Respiratory protection: When the concentration in the air exceeds the standard, a gas mask should be worn. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus during emergency rescue or evacuation
The device.
Eye protection: Wear chemical safety goggles.
Protective clothing: Wear anti-static work clothes.
Hand protection: Wear chemical resistant gloves if necessary.
Other: Smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited at the work site. After work, take a shower and change clothes. Store clothes contaminated with toxic substances separately, wash them before use. Pay attention to personal hygiene and cleanliness.
Emergency measures
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
Eye contact: Immediately open the upper and lower eyelids and rinse with flowing water or saline solution for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Quickly leave the scene and move to a place with fresh air. Keep the respiratory tract unobstructed. Keep warm and rest. Administer oxygen when experiencing difficulty breathing. When breathing stops, immediately perform artificial respiration. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion: If ingested by mistake, rinse mouth immediately, drink plenty of warm water, induce vomiting, and seek medical attention.
Extinguishing method: foggy water, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder, sand.
